It is merely towards end it starts to break apart, nevertheless slap-right up finale rescues they in the ‘red’. Wonderfully staged and wisely dialogued, it’ll have no great difficulties in way of living down their incredibly ugly term.” [ 8 ]
Month-to-month Flick Bulletin told you “The film actions at the a quick pace, the new dialogue was smooth and characterisations essentially energetic. Richard Brody regarding the The fresh Yorker listed “This terse and you will taut film noir is actually predicated on the latest intimate and you can top-notch issues of the identity profile, the new criminal mastermind (played from the Penis Powell) trailing a trendy illegal gambling establishment. The film’s creator and you may movie director, Robert Rossen, sets up an excellent multidimensional chess online game, for mortal bet, anywhere between Johnny, their boss (Thomas Gomez), his boss’s partner (Ellen Drew), a great cagey police inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and you can an effective scuffling celebrity (Evelyn Keyes) whose sister (Nina Foch) spent some time working from the casino and you may old an excellent corrupt detective (Jim Bannon). The brand new caustically epigrammatic program, the fresh new cast’s suavely managed body language of like and you can hazard, and you may Rossen’s thrillingly controlled and you will stylishly assertive pictures (as well as their political conscience) get this to pugnacious yet in depth spectacle a hidden vintage of style.” [ ten ]

Cobb, as a police inspector, and additionally up the score . As the plot follows a familiar development, this new characterizations is actually fresh while the performances good enough in order to overbalance. Dialogue was terse and you can topical, preventing the psychological, phoney reach. Unusual camera bases come-along occasionally in order to intensify attract and momentarily arrest the attention. Solid teamplay by Robert Rossen, doubling as movie director-scripter, and Milton Holmes, modern journalist and associate manufacturer, including supports making this a mellow development.” [ 11 ]

Its mostly a point of viewing Mr. Powell experience his paces stylishly if you’re a giant cast from actors and you will performers promote him classic support. Evelyn Keyes plays the great little lady just who brings out brand new best in him and you may Ellen Drew is the easy and you may slinky vixen who will get your into the jams. Thomas Gomez was oily once the villain and you can Lee J. Cobb really does yet another able journey since an exhausted police inspector exactly who ultimately closes the fact. A lot of drinking and you may puffing is carried out by the all of the worried.” [ several ]
